Telugu will be declared compulsory in Telangana’s CBSE, ICSE, and IB schools from Grades 1 to 10.

Telugu is now required as a second language for students at CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other board-affiliated schools, according to a recent directive by the Telangana government.

Beginning this academic year, Telugu will be required as a second language for students in CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other board-affiliated schools from Classes 1 to 10. The School Education Department has issued a circular on the subject.

It is part of the state government’s staggered implementation of the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act 2018 beginning in 2018-19.

As per the act, Telugu will be made compulsory from Classes 1 to 10, irrespective of the board.

“Violations of rules to implement Telugu as a compulsory subject from class 1-10 from the academic year 2022-23 onwards for all management and different Board-affiliated schools (CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other Boards) in Telangana state will be taken seriously and necessary actions will be taken as per the Act and guidelines given by the Telangana State Govt,” according to the circular, as reported by PTI.

The department has created two Telugu textbooks, one for Telugu-speaking students and one for pupils whose first language is not Telugu.

The state government further warned that non-compliance with the ordinance will have serious consequences for the NOC granted to those schools.
