Get Registered With Education Department Within One Month Or Face Closure: Uttarakhand Government To Madrassas

In Uttarakhand, madrassas have been given a month to register with the state department of education or face shutdown. The government estimates that there are 400 unregistered madrassas in the state.

“Madrassas have been given a month to register with the state department of education or face penalties. There would be measures taken to shut them down if they don’t reach the deadline “Minister of Social Welfare and Minority Welfare for Uttarakhand, Chandan Ram Dass.

The Uttarakhand Madrassa Board currently has 419 madrassas registered. 192 of them are supported by grants from the federal and state governments. The state government thinks that there are still about 400 unregistered madrassas.

Because they have trouble securing admittance after Class 5, kids who are not registered with the state education department risk having a difficult time continuing their education, according to Mr. Dass.

The instruction to register is intended to promote student welfare because only after doing so would they be able to take advantage of federal and state government programmes, he noted. The need for a study of the madrassas was recently emphasised by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami due to claims that the grants allocated to the institutions were not being used effectively.

Shadab Shams, the chairman of the State Waqf Board, claimed that he discussed the matter with the Chief Minister and that a team will soon be formed to survey the madrassas. Shams had made a compelling case for modern education in madrassas not long after taking over as the state Waqf board chairman last month. He stated that the board intended to implement the state education board curriculum in madrassas and offer its kids an education comparable to that of students in private and public schools. To enhance openness in their operations, madrassas would also have CCTV cameras installed, he added. 103 madrassas are managed by the Uttarakhand Waqf Board.
