“Idle School Land Prompts NGO Appeal to LG for New School Construction”

New Delhi: A non-governmental organization (NGO) that previously advocated for the relocation of children from a government-supported school on the brink of collapse has penned a letter to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, requesting the utilization of vacant government land in northeast Delhi for the establishment of a new school to benefit the local community. This land has remained unoccupied since 2018 when the aided school’s building was declared unsafe, prompting the transfer of its students to another government school.

The NGO in question, Social Jurist, had originally filed a petition in 2018, highlighting the dire conditions of the Alok Punj Senior Secondary School in Karawal Nagar, which had been in operation since 1976. Despite receiving 95% government aid from 1982 onwards, the school faced severe infrastructure and staffing shortages, affecting over 2,600 students. Subsequently, the court ordered the students’ relocation.

Now, with the land sitting unused, Social Jurist has proposed constructing a senior secondary school to alleviate the issue of overcrowded schools in the area, emphasizing the larger public interest. This initiative aims to provide better educational opportunities for the community’s children.
